Our first game was a hard fight: 1 - 1 draw against Stowford Primary School who are a large school from Ivybridge - 4 classes to select their team!
Then we beat our local rivals, Thurlestone Primary School, 4 - 1. ( who were champions last year!)
In our last group game we played Ermington Primary School which finished in a 4 - 4 draw. Very exciting.
This left us 2nd equal in the group and in a 3 minute playoff game against Ermington which was still level at 1 - 1 when the final whistle blew. This meant it was 'sudden death' i.e. first to score wins . . . . . . . after going back and forth until the umpire was getting tired Maddie Walker was the hero of the moment with the 'golden goal' which put us into the semi-finals.
The semi-finals pitted us against Manor Primary School (another large Ivybridge school) who were the winners of the other division. Laura and Abi made some exquisite moves in the goal third and kept possession against the odds. We nicknamed them the 'green giants' . . . . . . . . . they were giants and wore green . . . . . . . but our little team were not overawed and we won 5 - 3 to put us into the final!
It was Stowford again in the final and it was very close. But in the fading light, they squeaked the win 1 - 0 and they will go on to represent the South Hams in the county tournament.
I think it's amazing that our little school did so well to come 2nd out of all the primary schools in the District. Katy, Lucy and Heather gave 100% and it definitely paid off, as they held their ground against more experienced players.
It shows what teamwork and dedication can do and they did it with great joy and sportsmanship.
Team members for tournament: Katy, Pheobe, Maddie, Laura, Lucy, Heather and Abi , but Ellie and Marea deserve a lot of credit too for their commitment and enthusiasm in our squad.
Note from School: Many congratulations from everyone at school and a huge thank you to Ruth Derry and Katie Lethbridge for their enthusiasm and dedication
